Freeview continues to catch-up on Sky

Freeview sales have increased yet again with sales of Freeview digital boxes and digital TVs passing the 10m mark.

Freeview said that an increase in sales of personal video recorders and digital TVs has helped to maintain its growth.

The Freeview service is backed by the BBC, National Grid Wireless, BSkyB, ITV and Channel 4. It currently offers over 30 free digital television channels as well as over 20 free digital radio stations.

Ilse Howling, general manager of Freeview, said: "With the addition of new entertainment channels, including E4, More 4, Sky Three, ITV4 and CITV, and with FilmFour on the way, we offer a compelling and simple route to digital TV. Our audience is genuinely mass market and mainstream -- with the new channels attracting a younger audience."

Freeview has 6.4m viewers and is still behind the 8m Sky Digital subscribers.
