Plans have been confirmed today by the BBC to close down digital stations, the BBC Asian Network and BBC 6 Music.
In proposals sent to the BBC Trust, the BBC said the Asian Network faces its national service on DAB being shutdown but will retain its local AM outputs in Birmingham and Leicester. With the closure of the BBC Asian Network's national broadcast, the BBC is "increasing the quality of local radio and boosting investment in local news."
Whilst details are sketchy of how the BBC Asian Network will continue post 2011, it is likely that the local outputs will be networked and syndicated nationally on local stations where there are large Asian communities.
In the strategy review, the BBC has proposed the following to the BBC Trust; "One option is to replace it with a network of five part-time local services with some syndicated national Asian programmes. These would be available on local DAB and local Medium Wave, serving areas with the largest British Asian communities."
During the briefing Mr Thompson said the earliest the BBC Asian Network and 6 Music would close would be by the end of 2011.
The proposals have now been submitted to the BBC Trust where a public consultation period will take place.
At a staff meeting at BBC Television Centre this morning, Mark Thompson, Director General announced, "The BBC can't do everything and it has to recognise the challenges facing commercial media. But people who are hoping the corporation is going to be reduced to a fraction of its size will be disappointed."
He has also confirmed that there will be 25% less spent on BBC online by 2013.
Other closures will be of teen services Switch and Blast, with Mr Thompson admitting Channel 4 should lead the way with these audiences.
As a result of the changes Mr Thompson said he expected the plans would see an extra £600m diverted into programme-making.

Excellent news! I think ever since the station went national it has gone downhill. Let's hope it can become the station it once was when it was local only!

Why is everyone up in arms about the closure of BBC Asian Network. As you can see from your Biz Asia Weekly Poll there are so many other radio stations.
So what is the problem?. I hear Sanjhi Awaz Radio - DAB Digital radio and Online is being launched.
What we need is competition so we can strive to achieve higher standards of broadcasting instead of having too many poor quality radio stations.
I hope Sanjhi Awaz Radio will fill this gap.

What a shame! I'm gutted. Shame on the BBC to take away the only Multi cultural national Radio platform.
I hope that the BBC Director General will also take a PAY CUT while he decides to reduce costs!!!!!!!!!!

There are much more better Asian stations to listen to. Sunrise Radio isn't perfect but it does play good music. Asian Network is a confused station and doesn't know who its target audience is, I can't stand the English / Western stuff on an Asian station.

At least, BBC has the courage to take tough decisions unlike radios like Panjab radio who have actually become a parasite with no improvement in programmes but constant appeals for money..poorest signal nationwide on DAB..what an eyewash..

the listenership of the asian network has been dropping consistently and the quality of presenters and what they say has gone from bad to worse. how do u justify tax payers' money being channelled towards mediocrity?
what annoys me more is the fact that they will actually have jobs until the end of 2011. why does it take 18 months to shut shop?

As British Asians we should all be working together to save the Asian Network. It is the one avenue that the BBC have set up for us to actually benefit from the television License Fee that we pay. The BBC AN listen to their listeners opinions and have constantly tried to mould their schedule, programmes and topics around what they believe we want.

Those who are campaigning to save the station need to look at how much money the bloodsuckers have eaten. If they find out the figures they will burn the station down themselves. They will squeeze every last penny until the station closes.
(In an ideal world I would like a police investigation into where all the public money has gone)

No one will miss that garbage radio station. Poor music, poor programmes. Only the weekend programmes are good but on weekend you wanna watch TV. Good riddance.

It's the best decision BBC have made to get rid of this pathetic poor quality, worst presented Asian radio station. There are loads of other Asian Programm providers who are far superior and better quality than this crap, waste of money station. Why wait till 2011, why not right now? I am sure it won't be missed.
