Asian Network presenters slam BBC plans

Two BBC Asian Network presenters have slammed the BBC's plans to axe the station.

Sports presenter Nikesh Rughani and reporter Rahila Bano have both reacted with dismay at the reasons for shutting it down.

Rughani wrote in Broadcast's Ariel magazine saying that the BBC had "ruined" the network with "poor management". He added: "Commercial radio simply cannot provide the British Asian audiences with the quality of content we produce.

"We cover sport in a way that nobody else in the Western world would even dream of. We talk about British Asians in sport…and we’re the only radio station in the world that gives a platform to UK Asian artists. Seriously, how can the BBC even think about getting rid of us?"

Rahila Bano said: "The proposal to close the Asian Network is a devastatingly backwards step. We should be looking to strengthen the national network, return to the format that was popular with audiences a few years ago.

"Please Mr Thompson, if you care about growing the audiences, reconsider your decision it will do in the long term is incalculable."

Who are these two trying to kid? They are just gutted that the "gravy train" is ending soon. What an insult to other "Asian" media companies like Britasia tv (football) Zee Network (bollywood) Sabras Radio (cultural events). Can all you washed-up presenters go and get a real job and stop using your colour as a passport to high paid jobs in a VERY competitive sector - if these people and AN connected so much to the Asian community then why aren't they publishing their views for support in "desi" papers but suspiciously in those that are read by the white middle class management, could it be that they are the ones that might give them another tokenistic job? Please pull the plug today and free-up the airwaves for new voices not inflated egos.

Those presenters are talking rubbish, the BBC Asian Network doesn't even register on Rajar within most localities, FACT! Do they appeal to the majority? NO! Have those involved with the BBC Asian Network been like fat kids in a sweet shop? YES! If you look at the rest of the BBC i.e. Radio 1 there has been an ongoing focus to nurture talent i.e. Chris Moyles, Ferne Cotton whereas the BBC AN have often gone out and poached 'talent'.
