Two DJs axed & Noreen moves on Asian Network

The BBC Asian Network has confirmed to BizAsia.co.uk that it is axing two weekend shows and moving Noreen to 'Weekend Breakfast', as a part of the station's ongoing schedule shakeup.

Currently presenting the 'Asian Chart Show' on Saturday afternoons, Noreen will replace Tommy Sandhu, who is taking over the weekday 'Drivetime Show' from next month.

Noreen says, "I’m really excited about waking up the nation on the weekends. Whether you are going out to work, getting the children's parathas ready for breakfast, or having some me-time with a cup of tea, I'll wake you up with the best music and some fun, adding some bounce to your weekend!"

Husain Husaini, Head of Programmes, BBC Asian Network, says, "Every time Noreen appears on the radio, our audience tells us how much they like her. They relate to her warm, friendly style and her love of Asian music and culture."

There will be a more detailed new weekend line up announced in the next few weeks. As part of those changes 'Electro East' with Nerm and 'Pathaan’s Musical Rickshaw' will finish at the end of March.

Husain Husaini says, "Nerm and Pathaan were the voices and the inspiration behind two unusual and creative programmes. We are proud of some of the magical musical moments they have been responsible for over their time at the Asian Network and we wish them well in the future."

Earlier this month, the station made its initial 2010 schedule changes, when in addition to Tommy Sandhu’s new show; it announced that Sonia Deol will move from Friday afternoons to a new weekday Morning Show, 10:00 - 12:30. Tommy and Sonia will begin their new slots from Monday 8th February.

The changes are being lined-up days ahead of the BBC Asian Network's latest RAJAR radio listening figures, which are due out next week.

Horrible, horrible news... The only two shows I listen on the network axed. Absolutely rubbish. These guys were a breath of fresh air, there is already so much corn and cheese in the asian music scene, these guys were fighting for the balance (well Paathan's MCing was as cheesy as it gets).

Anyway, I am very disappointed about this...
