Two-thirds of UK have digital TV

UK goes digitalMore than two-thirds of the UK's 60 million televisions get their signals digitally from Sky, Freeview or digital cable according to latest figures from Ofcom.

The communications regulator latest quarterly Digital Progress Report, released today, also suggests the number of households without any digital TV dropped to 3.3m in the first quarter of 2008 - 1.7m fewer than the same period in 2007.

The number of households that converted their main TV set to digital rose from 86.5% in the last quarter of 2007 to 87.2% in the first three months of 2007. It adds that many householders are now focusing on converting secondary TV sets in their homes.

The number of primary TV sets links to DTT has risen from by 1.3 million in the past 12 months to 9.6 million, Sky's satellite services saw a 43,000 rise to 8.3 million subscribed and 3.5 million people use Virgin Media's cable service, up by 36,800 in the first quarter of 2008.

The full document, including an explanation on the methodology, can be found at the Ofcom website here.
